From the first conversation to passing your driving exam — here you will learn exactly how the training process works with us.
Your Driver’s License Training Process in Munich — Clear & Trans parently Explained
Whether Basic, All-Inclusive, Intensive Course, or any license class: The path to your driver’s license always follows a proven roadmap. We show you all the steps — from registration to the exam — clearly and in a structured way.
1.
The first step on your path to a driver’s license is onboarding. Here you get to know the driving school, receive all important information about the training, and get access to the theory app as well as a personal contact person.
Details
The onboarding is your official kick-off at Fahrschule Leuchtenberg. In a personal meeting or via video call (depending on availability), we clarify all open questions, explain the exact training process, and discuss your goals. You will receive access to the theory app, an overview of theory dates, and information about the necessary documents for registration with the authority.
An important part of the onboarding is also assessing your individual situation: Do you already have prior knowledge? Do you need specific language support? Are you planning an intensive course or taking it at a relaxed pace? All of this helps us support you in the best possible way.
We also clarify organizational matters directly during onboarding: e.g., how many driving lessons you realistically need, how the lesson scheduling works, what is included in your chosen package, and what costs to expect. The goal is for you to start with a clear plan and a good feeling.
If you wish, you can book your assessment drive or first aid course right after. Our goal is to make getting started as easy as possible for you — without unnecessary paperwork or waiting times.
Requirements:
- Personal appointment or video call with the driving school
- Legal age or at least 16.5 years old
- ID card or passport for identification
- Willingness for a binding registration
2.
To register for the exam, you need to submit an application to the driver’s license authority. We help you with this and tell you exactly which documents you need — including an eye test, first aid certificate, and biometric passport photo.
Details
Once you have completed the onboarding, the next step is an important formal one: the application to the responsible driver’s license office. This is necessary so that you are later admitted to the theory and practical exams.
In Munich, this is usually handled by the KVR (District Administration Office). You will receive a checklist from us of all documents you need for the application. These include a valid ID card or passport, a current eye test (no older than 2 years), proof of participation in a first aid course, a biometric passport photo, and if applicable, a copy of your ID. You must submit these documents together, either in person or — depending on the authority — digitally.
Processing the application usually takes two to three weeks. During this time, you can already start with theory lessons and use the theory app. Once your application is approved, you will be assigned an exam number — this is your official admission to the theory exam.
We support you at every step: Whether it’s scheduling the first aid course or a recommendation for a quick eye test — you get all the information directly from us. Upon request, we also handle the appointment coordination with the authority for you.
Important: Without this application, you cannot take any exam later. The sooner you submit it, the sooner you can get started.
Requirements:
- Fully completed application for a driver’s license
- Valid ID card or passport
- Biometric passport photo
- Eye test (no older than 2 years)
- Proof of first aid course
- ID copy (for digital application)
- Application fee (approx. 50 €)
3.
Together we plan your practical driving lessons — tailored to your daily routine, your goals, and your availability. You get a clear overview of the process, the mandatory units, and all the next steps toward your driver’s license.
Details
After the application to the authority, it’s time to organize your practical training — specifically: your driving lesson plan. A structured process not only saves time but also gives you confidence on the way to the exam.
At Fahrschule Leuchtenberg, we take the time to create a driving lesson plan together with you that fits your daily routine. Whether you want to drive flexibly during the week, depend on weekends, or are specifically working toward a compact course — we build your schedule to suit you.
A typical plan includes regular practice lessons, the legally required special drives (cross-country, highway, night) and — if needed — additional drives for exam preparation. If you have booked the All-Inclusive package or the Intensive Course, these are already included and firmly scheduled. In the Basic package, additional hours can be flexibly added.
We use a digital planning tool through which you always have insight into your schedule, can make changes, or book new driving lessons. You can also see at a glance how many driving lessons you have already completed and how far along you are in the process.
If you wish, you can prioritize certain days of the week, times of day, or driving instructors. For students or working professionals, we also take school hours or work schedules into account. The goal is for you to make continuous progress — without scheduling stress.
A structured driving lesson plan helps you learn in a focused way and prepare optimally for the practical exam.
Requirements:
- Approval by the driving school after onboarding
- Theory lessons can begin in parallel
- Access to the app and planning tool
- Realistic self-assessment (e.g., through an assessment drive)
- Selection of a suitable package (Basic, All-Inclusive, or Intensive)
4.
With the theory app, you learn all exam questions effectively and on the go — in German or English. It guides you step by step and shows you exactly when you are ready for the theory exam.
Details
The theory app is your digital learning companion on the way to passing the theory exam. At Fahrschule Leuchtenberg, you get access to the app right after onboarding — free of charge and fully usable.
You can start learning immediately: The app offers all official exam questions from the current driving license exam regulation (FeV), regularly updated and available in multiple languages — ideal for international students. By default, you learn in German, but English, Turkish, and other common languages are also available.
The app works on all devices: smartphone, tablet, or desktop — and even offline when you’re on the go. You can set learning goals, create your own study plans, and receive regular feedback on your progress. The integrated exam simulation is particularly helpful: you get a realistic feel for the flow of the actual exam.
Additionally, the app is linked to our system — we can see how far along you are and support you in a targeted way. For example, if you have difficulties in certain topic areas, we address them in the theory lessons.
So you don’t learn alone, but with a system that accompanies you step by step — until you are ready for the exam. Many of our students pass on the first attempt — also because the app helps them know exactly when the right time has come.
Requirements:
- Access to the theory app (activated after onboarding)
- Smartphone, tablet, or PC
- Willingness to study regularly
- Basic knowledge of the chosen language (e.g., German or English)
- Active internet connection (for updates & synchronization)
5.
The theory lessons are the starting point of your training — and with us, anything but dry. We bring the road right into the classroom and teach you the knowledge you need for the exam — clearly, practically, and with real learning impact.

6.
As soon as you are ready and all requirements are met, you register for the theory exam. The exam takes place digitally at TÜV — with official questions, just like you know them from the app.
Details
The theory exam is the first major milestone on your path to a driver’s license. At Fahrschule Leuchtenberg, we prepare you specifically for it — with the theory app, lessons, review sessions, and optional coaching if you are still unsure.
The exam itself takes place at TÜV in Munich, usually on several days per week. You register through us or directly at the testing center as soon as you are ready. The prerequisite is that you have attended all 14 theory units and your application at the driver’s license office has been approved (including exam number).
The exam consists of multiple-choice questions — 30 questions in total, 20 from the basic material and 10 from the class-specific section. Each question has a penalty value. If you accumulate more than 10 penalty points or answer two questions with 5 penalty points incorrectly, the exam is considered failed.
The good news: You already know all the questions from the app. The process is also identical — you sit at a computer and click through the questions. The exam usually takes about 30 minutes. You receive the result immediately afterward.
If you don’t pass, you can retake the exam after two weeks. But don’t worry — over 90% of our students pass on the first attempt. Optionally, you can take an internal “dress rehearsal” with us: a realistic exam simulation with a subsequent review.
We also support you organizationally: from registration to communication with TÜV to selecting the right appointment.
Requirements:
- Confirmation of attendance at all 14 theory units
- Approval by the driving school (learning progress in the app)
- Valid exam number from the driver’s license authority
- Valid ID on exam day
- Exam fee (approx. 77 €)
- Optional: Theory exam simulation for preparation
7.
Now it gets practical: You learn to drive in real traffic — individually, safely, and step by step. Mandatory lessons plus practice units prepare you optimally for the exam and everyday life behind the wheel.
Details
Driving lessons are the heart of your driver’s license training. Here you put what you’ve learned from theory lessons and the app into practice — with an experienced driving instructor at your side. Together, you train safe, anticipatory driving in traffic.
Your training consists of two components:
- Practice drives:
The number is not legally prescribed but is individually adjusted — depending on your prior knowledge, your progress, and your personal sense of safety. On average, most students need about 20—25 driving lessons. - Special drives:
These are legally required and consist of:- 5x cross-country drives
- 4x highway drives
- 3x night drives
In total, 12 mandatory hours that you must complete — regardless of the package. They are a fixed part of all our offers (Basic, All-Inclusive, or Intensive Course).
Scheduling is flexible — through our app or directly through the office. You can specify preferred times, e.g., before work, after school, or on weekends. If you have booked the Intensive Course, all drives are already pre-planned and tightly scheduled.
We make sure you experience different traffic situations: city traffic, country roads, highway, parking, reversing, turning, hill starts — everything relevant for the exam and daily life. Behavior in dangerous situations and defensive driving are also specifically trained.
You receive regular feedback so you know what’s going well and what you can still improve. The goal is: You should not only pass — you should be able to drive safely and confidently.
Requirements:
- Passed theory exam
- Active driving lesson plan
- Completion of all special drives
- Regular attendance of appointments
- Willingness for honest self-reflection
- Valid ID for every driving lesson
- For automatic transmission exam: if applicable, B197 competence certificate (if manual transmission competence is desired)
8.
Are you ready? Then comes the last step: the practical exam at TÜV. In about 45 minutes, you show what you have learned — and in the best case, you secure your driver’s license right after.
Details
The practical exam is the crowning conclusion of your training — and the moment everything has been leading to. If you are at this point, you have already accomplished a lot: theory exam passed, all mandatory hours completed, many practice drives behind you. Now it’s about showing that you are ready for traffic — independently, responsibly, and safely.
The exam takes place at TÜV and lasts about 55 minutes in total. Of this, you spend about 45 minutes in the vehicle — with your examiner and your driving instructor. The remaining time is for the vehicle check, the pre-interview, and the debriefing.
You will be tested in various traffic situations: city traffic, country roads, highway — depending on the region. You will need to demonstrate parking, turning, hill starts, lane changes, turning, and anticipatory driving, among other things. Correct behavior at intersections and pedestrian crossings is also evaluated.
Don’t worry — you won’t be “surprised.” Everything that comes up in the exam, you have already practiced multiple times. If needed, we offer you a realistic exam simulation beforehand — so you go into the exam feeling confident.
After the drive, you receive the result immediately. If everything went well, we congratulate you on your driver’s license right there! If it doesn’t work out the first time: chin up — you can retake the exam after 14 days. And we will continue to support you.
Requirements:
- Completed special drives & sufficient practice drives
- Approval by your driving instructor
- Passed theory exam
- Current ID on exam day
- Exam fee (approx. 219 €)
- Exam assignment by the authority (valid exam number)
- Optional: Participation in exam simulation
Frequently Asked Questions About the Process
How Does the Driver’s License Training Work Exactly?
Here you will find answers to the most frequently asked questions about the process at Fahrschule Leuchtenberg — from registration to the practical exam.
How do I start getting my driver’s license?
The first step is registering at a driving school of your choice. At Fahrschule Leuchtenberg, you receive all information about the process, the app, and registration with the authority during onboarding. After that, you can start theory lessons right away.
What is the process for getting a driver’s license?
The process consists of 8 steps: onboarding, application to the authority, planning driving lessons, using the theory app, theory lessons, theory exam, practical driving lessons, and the practical exam. Each step builds on the previous one and is clearly structured.
What do I need to do if I want to get a driver’s license?
You need a valid ID, a biometric passport photo, an eye test, and proof of a first aid course. Then you register at a driving school, complete theory & practice, and pass both exams.
How many driving lessons are mandatory?
**12 special trips** are mandatory: 5× cross-country, 4× highway, 3× night driving. The number of practice hours is individual and depends on your learning progress.
How long does registration at the driving school take?
Registration with us takes about 30 minutes. Processing the driver’s license application by the authority usually takes 2—3 weeks. However, you can start with theory lessons and the app immediately.
How does the process work when getting a driver’s license?
After onboarding, theory lessons and parallel use of the learning app follow. Then you take the theory exam, complete driving lessons including mandatory drives, and finish with the practical exam.
How does a theory lesson work at the driving school?
Each theory lesson lasts 90 minutes and covers a specific topic such as right of way, traffic signs, or hazard awareness. Our driving instructors explain things practically and interactively, so you are well prepared for the exam.
Is it possible to get a driver’s license in 2 months?
Yes, with the right schedule and enough availability, you can get your driver’s license in about 6—8 weeks — especially with our Intensive Course. Prerequisites: fast application processing and regular participation in theory & practice.
What mistakes are allowed in the practical exam?
Minor mistakes like signaling too late or hesitant starts are usually not grounds for failure. However, serious mistakes like disregarding right of way, endangering others, or ignoring traffic signs lead to failing.
Do you have to take theory lessons in a specific order?
No. The order is flexible. You can join the course at any time and simply catch up on missed topics at the next session. What matters is that you complete all 14 units (12 general, 2 class-specific).
In what order at the driving school?
The process is as follows: Registration → Application to the authorities → Theory lessons & app → Theory test → Driving lessons → Practical test → Driver’s license. This sequence is required by law and is clearly communicated by us.
Which mistakes cause you to fail the practical driving exam?
Serious mistakes include: disregarding the right of way, running a red light, dangerous behavior, or insufficient vehicle control. Repeatedly failing to observe the surroundings can also lead to failure.
Can you pass with 11 penalty points?
No. In the theory exam, you may have a maximum of 10 penalty points — but only if no 5-point question is answered incorrectly twice. With 11 points or two serious errors, the exam is not passed.
Can you drive immediately after passing the exam?
Yes! After passing the practical exam, you receive a temporary driving authorization from the examiner — this is valid immediately. You will receive your card-format driver’s license a few days later by mail or at the office.
How much does the practical exam at TÜV cost?
The TÜV fee for the practical exam is approximately 219 €. Additionally, there may be an exam drive with your driving instructor. These costs are partially already included in our packages — depending on the plan.
In what order can you continue driving?
You can flexibly decide when to combine theory lessons and driving lessons — as soon as your application is approved. Important: Only after passing the theory exam are you allowed to take the practical exam.
In what order do you turn at the driving school?
When turning left: oncoming traffic has priority. When turning right: watch for pedestrians. In general, you learn the correct order in practice and in theory lessons — with many examples and driving exercises.
Who drives first at the driving school?
You can start at any time once you have registered — whether you are a beginner or have prior experience. There are no fixed group starts. After onboarding, you get started right away with theory, the app, and later practice.
What is the order at the driving school?
The legally prescribed sequence is: registration → application → theory → theory test → driving lessons → practical test. We provide you with a clearly structured schedule for this.
What comes first, theory or driving lessons?
Theory and practice run in parallel — you can start driving lessons as soon as the application is approved. However, you must pass the theory exam before you are admitted to the practical exam.
What is the process of the driving exam?
First, you take the theory exam at TÜV. After passing, driving lessons follow, then the practical exam. This lasts about 45 minutes and also takes place at TÜV — including a debriefing immediately afterward.
How does the practical exam for class A driver’s license work?
We do not currently offer Class A – our focus is on Class B, B197, B78 & BE. However, the process is similar: theory test → special trips → practical test on a motorcycle, including basic driving tasks.
